Calling All Bridge Experts and Enthusiasts Welcome to the 5-part Series on The Illuminating World of Bridges Part 2 PART 2 Public Space: Color Language (and its global model) Color theory: Light vs. Pigment Color Compositions and Narrative Interpretation Aesthetic Lighting, the Arts, and Dynamism Contemporary bridge lighting draws from other art-forms, theater  by crafting public dramas and music , where cadence lends rhythm and time. Lighting is essential to define the architectural form after dark. While the mounting locations and aiming of light sources are fixed, the production of luminous hues can change electronically. Although manufacturers tout the ability to create 16-million colors. The designer's artistic approach mandates selecting a minimal selection of the right colors. Introduce the variable of time : The light-artist programs color mixing systems into cross-fades. The resulting bridge image and resonance then varies over the course of evening and night. Luminous, transparent color overlays surfaces. Thus, the surface finish and illuminated color must blend. Circumvent undesirable color mixes like “urban mud” by conducting mock-ups for color palette selection. CONSIDER THE LOWLY UNDERPASS However you refer to it; an overpass, flyover, el-space; a viaduct made by train tracks, or roadways; metal or concrete. The structure is mostly experienced as a compressed lonely place. There is lots of action above: rushing, screeching trains; metal on metal. Cars, trucks, and buses; soft wheels rumbling. Getting somewhere on the straight away. When we cross by walking or bike under the deck, we intersect perpendicularly, often connecting neighborhood destinations for everyday errands, laundry, or back and forth from work and transit. At night the un-illuminated underpass is experienced as a barrier, a challenge to the nerves, especially for women. Illuminated, the space is transformed into a volume of light. The opening symbolizes a beckoning portal. Will you revitalize the neglected underpass into a meeting place? Citizens deserve more. When I left Arup, it was unclear where my next step would lead.   There were possibilities: Research and development focused on International Nighttime Design Initiative (NTD)   Community engagement for urban, after-dark environments Reach back — and forward —to build on Light Projects’ 20-years of infrastructure,   urban lighting  and city nighttime design — Leni Schwendinger Light Projects 1.0. or LSLP. All options have merged into nighttime design.   Leni Schwendinger Light Projects 2.0 is five years old. Add that to the 20 years prior and it adds up to a huge, unwavering 25-year commitment to urban lighting, infrastructure, research, community engagement ( NightSeeing™  ) applied to city improvement. Close to his one-year anniversary, Chris Bocchiaro  up-levels the team with his project management, technical and creative skills. So great!
